About the Raranga For Rangatahi Programme

Tēnā koe,

The whānau of the Hetet School of Māori Art are here to help rangatahi connect to Mātauranga Māori through weaving

Meet Dara

Dara started learning to weave online when she was 15 years old. Dara began with an introductory course in Raranga learning to weave simple baskets with weaving kaiako, Veranoa Hetet, here at the Hetet School of Māori Art.

Dara went on to complete other weaving modules with the Hetet School of Māori Art.

Although Dara is no longer a secondary school student she continues to enjoy weaving.

Meet Hugo

Hugo started learning to weave with the Hetet School of Māori Art in 2018 when he was just 13 years old.

You can hear Hugo talk about his weaving journey in this short video.

Hugo started with weaving simple baskets and has since gone on to Module 2 (Kete) and Module 3 (Kete Whakairo) and Taaniko with the Hetet School of Māori Art.

School Students Aged 12-19

Raranga For Rangatahi is ideal for students who want to learn more about Mātauranga Māori, and especially so for those who are keen to connect to their Māori cultural heritage.

The programme is also good for students who want to learn a new art or technology based skill or simply learn more about the Māori worldview and gain an insight into Māori traditions and values.

24/7 access for 12 months to online lessons in our Raranga Basics introductory course, with renowned Māori weaver and much-loved teacher, Veranoa Hetet via our virtual classroom.

The Raranga Basics course can be easily completed within 3 months, very-part time learning.

Each participant works at their own pace, sequentially through the lessons.

(There is no need for the onsite teacher or supervisor to also be a weaver as students learn best when following the lessons with Veranoa and working things out themselves).

The Raranga Basics course is normally $69 per person but we are offering schools this course at a group rate of $37 per school student or per teacher or parent.

The school will be sent a GST invoice, payable 20th month following the commencement of the programme.
